Indigenous Strategic Plan
The UBC Indigenous Strategic Plan (ISP) is UBC’s response to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, and the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Inquiry’s Calls for Justice. It is an action plan which aims to meaningfully advance the human rights of all Indigenous people and Peoples connected to the university. To learn more visit https://indigenous.ubc.ca/indigenous-engagement/indigenous-strategic-pl….
In the fall of 2021, The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences established its own ISP Working Group consisting of faculty, staff and student representatives. The group has completed a collective review of the ISP Self-Assessment Tool to support the practical implementation of ISP goals and actions, and is now moving on to the “Intent to Action” phase in which appropriate actions that can be taken as a Faculty will be identified and formal priorities developed. Tangible priorities will be placed in a performance measurement framework to support their implementation.
The goals, action and performance framework will lay the foundation for the development of our next Faculty’s Strategic Plan (2022-2025) with the aim to advance our engagement with Indigenous peoples and our commitment to reconciliation.
Previous Indigenization and decolonization efforts done by the Faculty include:
- Indigenous Advisory Committee struck in September 2020, which provides oversight and authority on the Faculty’s decolonization and indigenization efforts in the Entry-to-Practice PharmD (E2P PharmD) program to ensure the prioritization and respect of Indigenous knowledge, values, and practices. Membership is comprised of a mix of Indigenous and non-Indigenous individuals with subject matter expertise, some of which are faculty members and students of the Entry-to-Practice PharmD program.
- New required one-credit course introduced in professional year 2 of the Entry-to-Practice PharmD curriculum, as of 2021W (PHRM 261 Indigenous Health and Cultural Safety), which focuses on an overview of Indigenous health in Canada and the role a pharmacist can have in collaborating with Indigenous communities in providing culturally safe care and healing.
- In Summer 2021, the Academic Portfolio undertook an Environmental Scan seeking to better understand what is currently being done in the Academic Portfolio to decolonize and Indigenize curriculums, policies and practices, and examples of things that work, or opportunities we can expand on. The scan also focuses on the readiness to decolonize and Indigenize curriculums, policies and practices in the Academic Portfolio as well as what is required to decolonize and Indigenize curriculums, policies and practices in the Academic Portfolio.
- Across the Faculty, a significant amount of work is ongoing with respect to various Underserved groups, including those underserved due to geographical reasons, or through membership of a particular population. Members of the Academic portfolio participate in the Dean’s Task Force for Underserved Communities and the Indigenous Strategic Plan Working group, in an attempt to minimize silos and duplication between portfolios wherever possible.
