The University of British Columbia is pleased to announce that Dr. Peter Caravan will join the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at UBC Vancouver as the Eddie Goldenberg Distinguished Research Chair of Canada in Translational Molecular Imaging and Therapy. Dr. Caravan is expected to begin his appointment in July 2027.
This appointment is part of the Eddie Goldenberg Research Chairs of Canada program, supported through the Canada Global Impact+ Research Talent Initiative. The initiative commits $1 billion over 12 years to help Canadian post-secondary institutions attract exceptional researchers, including expatriate Canadians and top international talent, back to Canada. In its first round, UBC secured nine of the 66 chairs announced nationally, with eight positions at UBC Vancouver and one at UBC Okanagan.
Dr. Caravan brings both deep expertise and a personal connection to UBC. A Canadian citizen and UBC PhD alumnus, he returns to Canada after building an internationally recognized research career at Harvard Medical School, where he currently serves as a professor of radiology at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Dr. Caravan's research centres on molecular imaging, targeted imaging, and theranostics, the combined use of diagnostic and therapeutic tools to treat disease with precision. His laboratory develops molecular probes for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET), enabling clinicians and researchers to visualize disease processes at the molecular level. This work supports earlier, more accurate diagnosis and informs targeted treatment strategies across a range of conditions.
At UBC, Dr. Caravan will advance this translational research program within the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, strengthening the university's capacity in molecular imaging and contributing to UBC's broader efforts to recruit world-class researchers to campus.
