Pharmacist, First Nations Health Authority (FNHA), Health Benefits and Services
How would you describe your role as a Pharmacist with the FNHA?
My position at the FNHA is a unique role that allows me to utilize the skills and expertise that I gained during the UBC PharmD program. I directly support the First Nations Health Benefits program by providing clinical recommendations on cases, providing day-to-day operational support, and providing analysis and interpretation of drug utilization and population health data.
In addition, I provide consultation on pharmacy-related matters, professional and industry trends, and best practices in a variety of care settings to help inform FNHA and First Nations community programs. I also have the opportunity to collaborate with external health care professionals and partners for various projects and initiatives. My work is informed by the First Nations perspectives on health and wellness and an understanding of First Nations’ pharmacy care context and realities.
Who or what has been the biggest influence in your education/career?
My education and career have been influenced by many people, including professors, preceptors, colleagues, classmates, family, friends, and others. I wouldn’t be where I am without my incredible support network. One particular mentor who has made a huge positive impact on my career is Cindy Preston, director of pharmacy at FNHA. Cindy has passed on a wealth of knowledge to me and has led by example in teaching me to be a better communicator, collaborator, and leader in the pharmacy space. I originally met Cindy when I did a co-op with FNHA during my education and I’m extremely fortunate to have her continued guidance and support.
What accomplishments are you most proud of to date and what would you like to accomplish in the future?
I’m the first member of my family to complete post-secondary education beyond a bachelor’s degree so my PharmD designation is an accomplishment that I take pride in. I’m extremely proud of my role with FNHA, and as an Indigenous pharmacist, I recognize my responsibility to reduce racism and broaden cultural awareness in the pharmacy profession. I look forward to continuing to contribute to the FNHA’s mission of supporting BC First Nations individuals, families, and communities to achieve and enjoy the highest level of health and wellness.
What UBC moment are you still talking about?
I enjoyed my time at UBC and it’s hard to choose just one moment that I reflect positively on. A few highlights include attending Skits Night and other pharmacy-related events, playing on the Pharmacy Flyers intramural hockey team, and spending time on campus attending lectures and practice labs that were delivered by excellent professors and clinicians. I met a lot of wonderful people during my time in the PharmD program, many of whom I am lucky to have ongoing friendships with, which helped make even the longest days of studying enjoyable.
