Practice educators are essential members of the UBC Pharm Sci community and their contributions to student learning are fundamental to the success of our programs. In November 2022 UBC Pharm Sci community members gathered in-person for the first time since 2019 to formally honour and celebrate our volunteer practice educators and partners in experiential education.
Hosted at the Riverway Clubhouse in Burnaby BC, the Practice Educator of the Year, Outstanding Partner in Experiential Education, and Community Partner of the Year Awards evening included presentations, a buffet dinner and the opportunity to mingle with colleagues and peers. 64 nominees were recognized with 12 receiving awards. Of these awards, three were for practice educators and community partners nominated by students for the Practice Educator of the Year and Community Partner of the Year respectively for each practicum course, while nominations for the Outstanding Partner in Experiential Education award come from students, colleagues, and others in the community.
Catherine Cheung is a pharmacist at Fraser Health Transplant Clinic and recipient of a 2022 Practice Educator of the Year Award for her work with students in the Flexible PharmD program’s Pharmacy 493 (Specialist Outpatient) course. “Most pharmacy students and practicing pharmacists have more limited knowledge of pharmaceutical care in renal/transplant patients,” says Cheung. “I feel that it's my responsibility to share this important knowledge with them and it may even open some career doors for students in the future. I also enjoy learning new and exciting topics with my students and it's a privilege to have a safe and non-judgmental educational environment to learn together.”
Dr. Janice Yeung, director, Office of Experiential Education at UBC Pharm Sci emphasizes the Faculty’s deep gratitude for our experiential education partners. “Our experiential education program would not be possible without our partners. We are grateful for their ongoing collaboration and work with our students and the Faculty.”
