UBC Pharm Sci’s Dr. Jacquelyn Cragg’s journey from personal tragedy to scientific discovery has shaped her mission to support youth affected by violent crime. After losing her father in a traumatic incident as a child, she found solace in mathematics, which eventually led her to a career in health outcomes research at UBC. Now, she is using her expertise to give back, launching PromoScience—a mentorship program that pairs youth impacted by violence with UBC graduate students to explore scientific inquiry as a means of healing.
With funding from NSERC, PromoScience will provide mentorship and hands-on learning opportunities for 90 young participants over three years. By engaging in science fair projects and guided research, participants will develop confidence, resilience, and academic skills in a supportive environment. Dr. Cragg believes that science offers more than knowledge—it provides connection, purpose, and the power to heal. Read the full story here.
