UBC Pharm Sci data scientist and assistant professor Dr. Jacquelyn Cragg has today been awarded a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Open Data Science. Dr. Cragg is among sixteen new and renewed CRC recipients at UBC and 259 across Canada.
Dr. Cragg completed MPH and PhD degrees in epidemiology and biostatistics at the UBC School of Population and Public Health followed by postdoctoral fellowships with the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and International Collaboration on Repair Discoveries. Her current research aims to identify causes, risk factors, and biomarkers of neurological disease progression, including Parkinson’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, and stroke. Dr. Cragg’s research uses advanced analytical techniques and has applications in modelling disease progression, drug safety, and drug repurposing.
“Receiving a Canada Research Chair is an exceptional achievement and recognizes the cutting-edge impact of Dr. Cragg’s research program,” says Dr. Michael Coughtrie, UBC Pharm Sci professor and dean. “I’d like to extend my sincere congratulations to all new and renewed CRC recipients at UBC and beyond on behalf of all of us at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences.”
Today’s investment of $195 million together with earlier funding announcements marks the Canada Research Chairs Program’s largest commitment to research funding in a single calendar year, bringing the total active chairholders across Canada to 1,922.
“Our government is taking action to attract and retain the world’s brightest and most distinguished researchers,” says the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry.
“For over 20 years, the Canada Research Chairs Program has been mobilizing Canada’s most esteemed academics to train and mentor the next generation of researchers and pursue groundbreaking research that responds to society’s economic, social and health needs.”
