Objectives
- Continue to enhance student services, working with students to optimise to meet their needs.
- Associate Dean Students portfolio will continue to increase student engagement efforts and activities across programs to increase awareness of the ADS and its role in supporting students, building connections amongst students, and overall student support (2026).
- Office of ADGPS to support students through the Student Winter Housing Allocation Program organized by the UBC Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies Office; the program aids student recruitment and yield by allowing graduate programs to offer admission to selected applicants with a guaranteed spot for winter housing. EDI considerations will form a component of the selection process for the students (2024 and ongoing).
Achieved Goals
- Hired Indigenous Strategic Initiatives Manager with 0.5 FTE responsibility to provide support to Indigenous students through OSS (May 2023).
Undergraduate Students
- Created Associate Dean Students portfolio to enable the Faculty to better support students (Aug 2023).
- Created Student Engagement Coordinator role (Dec 2023), to better improve Faculty-student relations.
- Increased FTE of Student Counsellor role to 0.6 FTE (Feb 2024).
- $200,000 USD in funding granted by the McKesson Foundation to Jason Min and Larry Leung to build the first Indigenous Pharmacy Student Collegium in Canada (2023).
- SPIIF fund approved "Indigenous Student Support" by Larry Leung, Jason Min and Nadine Gerhardt as part of the UPROOT project—awarded $25,000. This project aimed to seed, grow, and formalize co-curricular and support structures for cultural safety for Indigenous and non-Indigenous students in the Entry-to-Practice PharmD Program through proposed pillars: 1) Indigenous student space, 2) Indigenous student mentorship program (April 2024); space was secured and consultations with Indigenous communities took place (fall 2024); the space was launched in Nov 2025. Mentorship program was created (Dec 2024).
- PharmD student Kelvin Magun was awarded the Indigenous Professional Pharmacy Canada (IPPC) Indigenous Pharmacy Scholarship by BioScript Solutions.
- Created Assistant Director roles in Entry-to-Practice PharmD program to better support students in the program (Oct 2024).
- The PhUS student Mental Health Task Force (MHTF) hosted events to support student mental health, including a bunny therapy event (Nov 2024 and ongoing).
- Created Indigenous Students Enhancement Fund” for UBC Giving Day (April 2025); this fund supported programs such as land-based learning and cultural immersion activities in clinical practice—along with outreach initiatives that supported Indigenous students in their studies.
- Initiated student engagement events to celebrate major cultural celebrations, e.g., Lunar New Year and Eid al-Fitr (fall 2024 and ongoing).
- EDIAC prioritized addressing student inquiries related to optimizing review processes for CFA students (fall 2025).
- Associate Dean Students portfolio continued to develop ways to involve the Pharm Sci Embedded Counsellor in providing proactive and supportive programming to students (2024). In the spirit of UBC Thrive Month, the OSS organized a two-part in person and online workshop series led by the Embedded Counsellor to support student mental wellness, focused on techniques for managing negative thinking and for building positive coping strategies such as mindfulness (fall 2025).
- Reviewed awards that were previously specific to the Graduate PharmD program, which no longer exists, to benefit students in current under/grad programs (fall 2025).
- Hosted a Halloween Trick-or-Treat event for students to provide a casual, low-barrier opportunity for students to connect with the Office of Student Services (OSS) and allowed the office to introduce undergraduate students to the support resources available through the OSS (Oct 2025); followed up with a tree decorating event (Dec 2025).
- Hosted ongoing cultural activities (e.g., Ribbon Skirt Making with Indigenous Students) (Nov 2025).
- Introduced Professionalism Accolades to recognize select students for outstanding and impactful acts of professionalism. The purpose was to promote a culture of professionalism by highlighting positive behaviours and contributions (fall 2025).
Graduate Students
- With the support of the ADGPS Office, a UBC Pharm Sci Postdoctoral Society was established, with a goal to foster a vibrant postdoctoral fellow community through organized social and professional development activities (2023).
- Combined the Graduate Student Professional Development Working Group and Graduate Student Advisory Committee into a single group to better serve student needs (Nov 2025).
- Featured recent Indigenous graduate Danielle Hanke on the Faculty website to highlight and celebrate student success through their story of academic achievement and community involvement to serve as an inspiration to current and future students (fall 2025).
