UBC to launch new Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences program

We are pleased to announce the new UBC Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences program was formally approved by the Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Training on November 25, 2019. The approval of this innovative new program marks a major milestone for the Faculty.

The Pharmaceutical Sciences cover the principles and technologies that underpin drug discovery and development, and the evaluation of their effectiveness. This encompasses pharmacology, the study of drug action and disposition, but includes broader applications such as formulations, nanomedicine, diagnostics, pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacoepidemiology and more. Graduates of the Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences program will be highly sought for positions in the discovery, development, and production areas of the pharmaceutical, life sciences or biotechnology industries, regulatory authorities, and government. This program will also prepare students to undertake graduate level studies in pharmaceutical sciences.

“Approval of the Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences program comes from a tremendous amount of work by members of the program task force, together with support of the Provost’s Office and UBC Faculty of Science,” says Dr. Michael Coughtrie, professor and dean.

“We look forward to implementing the program over the coming months and welcoming the first class in September 2020.”

The new Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences program will be the only of its kind in Western Canada and only English-language program Canada-wide.
