Prescribing with Confidence: An Interactive OSCE-Style MACS Workshop

In this 4-hour in-person workshop, participants will have the opportunity to practice the application of the Pharmacists’ Patient Care Process (PPCP) in the provision of Pharmacist Prescribing for Minor Ailments and Contraception (PPMAC) services in small groups through a variety of educational stations. Participants will benefit from therapeutic discussions and feedback from an experienced pharmacist prescriber in each station. In select stations, participants will also receive feedback from standardized patient actors to improve their ability to provide patient-centered care.

Program Highlights 

  • The program will provide a review of the Pharmacists’ Patient Care Process (PPCP) in the context of providing minor ailments and contraception prescribing clinical services
  • Participants will experience nine interactive objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) style stations in small groups
  • Stations will cover a diverse range of topics including contraception, musculoskeletal pain, shingles, tobacco use disorder, urinary tract infection, seborrheic dermatitis, impetigo, conjunctivitis and pinworms
  • Participants will receive individualized peer and expert feedback on clinical service provision
  • The program will provide an opportunity to network with other pharmacists who are passionate about expanded scope of practice activities and are interested in enhancing their diagnosing and prescribing skills 

Learning Objectives 

During this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to practice:  

  1. Applying the Pharmacists’ Patient Care Process (PPCP) in the provision of minor ailments and contraception prescribing services
  2. Collecting and assessing information pertaining to a patient’s clinical presentation and relevant medical history to determine possible diagnoses
  3. Comparing and contrasting management options for minor ailments and contraception services to achieve the patient’s goals of therapy, including the following:
    1. Prescription pharmacotherapy
    2. Non-prescription pharmacotherapy
    3. Non-pharmacological recommendations
    4. Referral to other health care providers
  4. Creating a patient-specific therapeutic plan for achievement of the patient’s goals of therapy
  5. Developing a monitoring and follow-up plan to ensure achievement of the patient’s goals of therapy

Who Is This Program For? 

The workshops are designed for BC Pharmacists who wish to expand their practice and knowledge skills pertaining to minor ailment conditions. This is a live in-person workshop; attendance is mandatory.

If a space becomes available in the workshop, waitlisted individuals will receive an email from Canvas Catalog with an invitation to complete registration. They will have 12 hours from receiving this email to complete enrollment and make payment to secure their spot. If the spot is not claimed within that window, the space will become available to the next person on the waitlist.

Fees  

$99.00 after subsidy from the BC Ministry of Health as part of Pharmacists Prescribing for Minor Ailments and Contraception.

Accreditation 

The workshops are approved for Continuing Education Units (CEU) by the UBC Continuing Pharmacy Professional Development unit.
