Dr. Gilly Lau attained his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy degree from the University of British Columbia in 2013 and subsequently attained his Doctor of Pharmacy degree through UBC’s Flexible PharmD Program in 2023. Prior to joining the Faculty, Gilly worked as a Pharmacy Manager in a community pharmacy. While in this role, he maintained involvement with UBC's Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences as a practice educator for UBC students completing their introductory and advanced pharmacy practicums, as well as for international pharmacy graduates completing their structured practical training. Pursuing his interest in teaching and mentoring students, he further participated in the Faculty as a pharmacist facilitator for students learning in pharmacy practice skills labs. He is currently a Course Coordinator, Structural Practical Training Lead, and Community Engagement (IPPE) Lead with the Faculty’s Office of Experiential Education. Additionally, he is the PY1 Experiential Skills IA Lead with the Faculty’s Integration Activities team. His interests include student development of pharmacy practice skills, facilitating student involvement in community engaged learning, and quality assurance in experiential education.

Jon Grosshuesch is an Assistant Professor of Teaching at the University of British Columbia's Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. His background is in community pharmacy practice, and he teaches students in the Entry-to-Practice PharmD program on how to assess patients and recommend pharmacotherapy as well as behavioural and non-pharmacological interventions related to tobacco use and nicotine dependence. Jon also advises on how best to navigate the BC Smoking Cessation Program to improve patient care, with an additional focus on approaches to counseling, monitoring, and following up with patients before, during, and after quit attempts.

Description

In this in-person workshop, participants will have the opportunity to practice the application of the Pharmacists’ Patient Care Process (PPCP) in the provision of Pharmacist Prescribing for Minor Ailments and Contraception (PPMAC) services. Participants will benefit from therapeutic discussions with peers and feedback from the facilitators.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Apply the Pharmacists’ Patient Care Process (PPCP) in the provision of minor ailments and contraception prescribing services.
  • Collect and assess information pertaining to a patient’s clinical presentation and relevant medical history to determine possible diagnoses.
  • Compare and contrast management options for minor ailments and contraception services to achieve the patient’s goals of therapy, including the following:
    • Prescription pharmacotherapy
    • Non-prescription pharmacotherapy
    • Non-pharmacological recommendations
    • Referral to other health care providers
  • Create a patient-specific therapeutic plan for achievement of the patient’s goals of therapy.
  • Develop a monitoring and follow-up plan to ensure achievement of the patient’s goals of therapy.
