What does your PhD research focus on?

Currently, there is no effective treatment available to cure dementia, particularly Alzheimer’s disease. One of the main reasons for the failure of drugs for Alzheimer’s disease is an inadequate understanding of the pathophysiology. My research is aimed at improving the lives of those living with Alzheimer’s disease by addressing this critical gap in knowledge.

Specifically, I am focusing on compensating for the loss of neurites and synapses and enhancing communication within the neural network to reduce memory impairment. To achieve this, I am investigating the role of somatostatin (an inhibitory neuropeptide) and dopamine receptor interaction in promoting neuritogenesis in Alzheimer’s disease models.

What are some of the highlights of your time at UBC Pharm Sci so far?

I must say that my first publication as a PhD student was a defining moment during my graduate program, instilling in me a sense of confidence that I have the potential to do great science and inspiring me to pursue more ambitious projects. Additionally, being awarded the MATRIX-N junior scholar award, and the Friedman award for scholars in health and representing my research work at various international conferences including the LANCET Neurology Summit was an incredible experience. It not only boosted my confidence but also provided me with invaluable networking opportunities.

How have you found support and community at Pharm Sci?

Pharm Sci has always been very supportive and has provided a safe environment for me to grow as a scientist. My peers, mentors, and supervisor are all very friendly, inclusive, and supportive, which helps me focus and feel motivated toward achieving my research goals. The collaborative and multidisciplinary nature of the labs in the Faculty has also exposed me to diverse perspectives and approaches, enriching my learning experience.

Moreover, the Faculty provides ample opportunities for professional development, including seminars, workshops, and conferences. These activities have allowed me to enhance my research skills, stay abreast of the latest developments in my field, and network with other researchers.

While not working in the lab, what are some fun activities you enjoy doing in and around Vancouver?

I enjoy exploring the many unique theme cafes that Vancouver has to offer. From cat cafes to board game cafes, each one offers a different atmosphere and experience. I find it a great way to unwind and spend time with friends.

When I want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, I love to explore the beautiful mountains and beaches that surround Vancouver. I am constantly in awe of the stunning natural landscapes that British Columbia has to offer.

In addition to my love for outdoor activities, I am also a trained Indian classical dancer. This has been a passion of mine since childhood, and I continue to practice and train myself whenever I can. Dancing provides an outlet for me to express myself creatively and to stay connected to my cultural heritage.

What advice would you give to prospective students considering pursuing graduate studies at UBC Pharm Sci?

Always keep your passion and curiosity alive. Remember, your graduate program is not just about acquiring knowledge and conducting research, but also about personal and professional growth. Take the time to invest in yourself and your future by building a strong skill set, establishing a professional network, and exploring your passions and interests. Do not hesitate to ask questions, pitch your ideas, or challenge the status quo, as you may have entered the program with the goal of becoming a leading researcher in the field, but you may discover your exceptional leadership and entrepreneurial skills during your journey! Spread your wings and see how far you can fly!
