Gary D. Lopaschuk, BSc(Pharm)'78, MSc(Pharm)'80, PhD(Pharm)'83
A triple alumnus of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Dr. Lopaschuk is a distinguished university professor of pediatrics at the University of Alberta, Edmonton. He is a cardiovascular researcher who focuses on the regulation of fatty acid oxidation in the heart and the mechanism by which high rates of fatty acid oxidation contribute to heart disease and heart failure.
His research has resulted in the publication of over 400 original research articles and he has been recognized by awards such as the Canadian Cardiovascular Research Achievement Award and the International Academy of Cardiovascular Sciences Research Achievement Award. He is also the President and CEO of Metabolic Modulators Research Ltd, a biotechnology company that is developing novel drugs to treat heart disease by optimizing energy metabolism in the heart. As part of the evening, Dr. Lopashuck will present a keynote talk that will focus on his career journey, motivations and inspirations to pursue the ground-breaking research that he and his lab are undertaking and how his research has translated into the business world.

Arden Barry, BSc'01, BSc(Pharm)'06, PharmD'10
Dr. Arden Barry completed his bachelor of science in pharmacy from the University of British Columbia (UBC) in 2006, his Pharmacy Practice Residency with Vancouver Coastal Health/Providence Health Care in 2008, and his doctor of pharmacy from UBC in 2010. He went on to complete a postdoctoral fellowship in cardiovascular pharmacotherapeutics from the Division of Cardiology, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, at the University of Alberta in 2012. In 2011, Dr. Barry became one of the first 150 pharmacists in Alberta to obtain their Additional Prescribing Authorization, which allowed him to prescribe independently. After completing his fellowship, Dr. Barry was a clinical pharmacy specialist in the Coronary Intensive Care Unit at the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute in Edmonton until moving back to BC in 2015.
Dr. Barry is currently an assistant professor (partner) with the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and an associate member of the Department of Family Medicine, both at UBC. As well, he is a clinical pharmacy and research specialist with Lower Mainland Pharmacy Services, and maintains a clinical practice at two clinics. He is the member representing community hospitals on the Board of the College of Pharmacists of BC, and is an active member of the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists. He is a past president of the CSHP Alberta Branch, and currently serves on both the Excellence in Hospital Pharmacy Steering Committee and Banff Seminar Planning Committee. Dr. Barry’s professional and research interests include dyslipidemia, cardiovascular risk reduction, expanded scope of pharmacy practice, and social media.
