Commitment and collaboration: Recognizing the Faculty’s practice educators and community partners at annual event

October 28, 2021

UBC Pharm Sci community members gathered virtually on October 13, 2021 to recognize and celebrate the many contributions of our practice educators and community partners. Practice educators and community partners are practicing pharmacists who volunteer their time and expertise to support Entry-to-Practice Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) students on their practicums.

Viewers from across British Columbia participated in the virtual event. Opening remarks were presented by Dr. Janice Yeung, director, Office of Experiential Education (OEE), followed by a welcome message from Dr. Michael Coughtrie, professor and dean. OEE course coordinators Tristan Lai, Paulo Tchen, Kayla Fang, and Gilly Lau presented awards to practice educators in each of the undergraduate practicum courses, and to those in the Structured Practical Training and Flexible PharmD program practicum courses. Also at the event, Entry-to-Practice PharmD students Nika Maghsoud, Jamie Park, and Jeffrey Lam spoke of the positive impact practice educators have had on their educational journey.

Practice educators are essential members of the UBC Pharm Sci community and contribute greatly to the future of pharmacy practice in the province. These awards are one way the Faculty seeks to honour and acknowledge their contributions. Students are given the opportunity to nominate practice educators after each of their practicums and all nominations are acknowledged by the OEE. A panel consisting of two OEE course coordinators and one faculty member review the submitted nominations independently. Award recipients for each practicum receive a plaque and recognition at the annual event.

“We hope this event expresses how appreciative we are for the many experiential education partners who play a critical role in the training and professional development of our students,” says Dr. Yeung.

“We are grateful for the additional time and support our partners have generously dedicated to ensure the continuity of student learning throughout the ongoing challenges of the pandemic. Our academic programs would not be possible without their commitment and collaboration with the Faculty.”
